Freedom. It's a feeling which most bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts would agree there is no substitute for. Who can resist the siren call of the open road, the roar of the motor, the wind in one's face? Yet for all these romantic notions, certain realities must be observed when taking the old hog out on the highway—namely, where are you going to store your stuff?

Motorcycle luggage is a vital and expanding part of the motorcycle industry affording greater convenience to riders everywhere. Motorcycle luggage comes in many different sizes, shapes and colors. While most conform to the standard black backpack design, there are also cylindrical roll bags, attachable plastic trunks and mini-trunks and full dressers. At the other end of the spectrum, there are miniature tube-like tool bags as well as shuttle packs that can attach to the front of the bike or any metallic surface with suction cups or strong magnets.

The most basic variety of motorcycle luggage is the saddlebag. These are generally made from leather or imitation leather, though polyester, canvas and even clear plastic versions are available. Some saddlebags now come standard with certain types of motorcycles, such as the Harley Davidson Road King Classic. The other basic variety of luggage is the hard bag, which is usually constructed out of fiberglass or hard plastic. These are often included with newer Road Kings and various touring bikes.

There are many kinds of soft luggage and hard luggage that can be attached to a number of areas on the bike. Smaller bags can be affixed to the handlebars while larger ones can be attached to the backrest/sissy bar, to a passenger seat or to a luggage rack designed for just this purpose. Certain saddlebags are built at an angle (usually 10°) so that when the bag is mounted on the back of the motorcycle, it can double as a backrest for the rider.

Motorcycle luggage also includes bags that have been customized with new features for greater efficiency. Rollers and telescoping handles allow for easy transport, much as they do on regular travel luggage. Additional pockets on the outside of many bags provide more storage space. There are motorcycle luggage bags that come equipped with vinyl ice liners that transform the bag into a cooler or rain liners to protect your items from the weather. Keeping with the times, some motorcycle luggage bags have special compartments for laptop computers and other technology.

Motorcycle luggage bags also come customized for carrying more unorthodox or unusually shaped cargo such as extra helmets and even pets! A special kind of saddlebag comes with a removable (and machine washable) lamb's wool pad and adjustable leashes so that Fido can take part in that big cross-country trek.

Motorcycle luggage can be an expression of the rider's identity as well as a convenience. Accessories and artistic touches such as silver studs, embroidered designs or tattoos, and silver plates highlighted by animal shapes and symbols are available.

There are dozens of companies that produce motorcycle luggage. Some of the more famous brands include Saddlemen, T-Bags, Boss Hoss, Baja, Willie & Max, Givi, Ace Leather Products, Kurakyn and many others. Riders who do not buy cycles with motorcycle luggage bags already included have the option of purchasing them at motorcycle dealerships or online stores. Whatever the variation or style, motorcycle luggage is an invaluable asset to the biker on his or her journey.
