School Backpacks: Kids Backpacks

Published: November 7, 2006

It is that time again.  As the summer days drift into cooler evenings, as the departments stores advertise new kids clothes, the phrase on many people's lips is back-to-school. Parents smile as they know their kids will have homework again, children rejoice at the prospect of seeing their friends daily, the only thing left to do is school shopping. With the outfit picked out, shoes laced and ready, another detail yet remains: choosing a school backpack. School backpacks say as much about a student as their clothing, and with so many different styles to choose from, how does one figure out what to carry their books in?

First of all, our student needs to figure out what's more important to them. Size, comfort, durability, style, and intricacy all need to be considered. JanSport, one of the most popular brands, is a great place to start. They have a tremendous range of school backpacks, from climbing packs to backpacks inspired by business—they are also customizable.

For the students that are stalwarts of durability, mountaineering and sport vendors are the place to go as they specialize in rugged and synthetic school backpacks, often accompanied with lifetime guarantees. North Face is perhaps the best known sport brand, as their backpacks can be used for camping, traveling, expeditions, and of course, school.

The tech savvy student can find solace in school backpacks that have a specific compartment for laptops. Even more impressive are the newest bags with built-in iPod controls and cell phone microphones and speakers. For our school patriots, there are school backpacks that our completely clear, ensuring everyone's safety.

For the school fashionista there are a myriad of possibilities when it comes to school backpacks: messenger bags, traditional two strapped backpacks, and the ever so popular bag on wheels. Once the overall shape is decided upon, a wide variety of colors and materials are available. Brand names and styles bank on creating attractive options for students, no matter their interest. Snowboard companies make rough, punk inspired backpacks while urban brands market street inspired bags with an edgy flair. This isn't for everyone though. Lately many students have begun to take matters into their own hands; they buy blank backpacks then decorate and style it themselves with paint, patches, and stickers.

However, fashion isn't the only concern. In recent years, many students have begun to complain of back pain which many people ascribe to school backpacks. As it is also the most common ailment among adults, doctors and school officials have created general guidelines to help students avoid this problem.

The most prevalent being:
-wear both straps
-position over the mid-back
-limit the weight to 15% of bodyweight

Once safety is established, and the proper style and type of school backpack is chosen, the only step left is for our student to head to school with a smile. And don't worry, they'll make the right first impression, they've got everything they need on their back and the rest of the year in front of them.
